Atlantic Highlands is a small Victorian town on the New Jersey shore overlooking lower New York Bay, with Manhattan in the distance. Its hills include the highest po
int on the eastern seaboard south of Maine. Many of Atlantic Highlands' Victorian homes have been preserved and restored, adding to the charm of small-town living and providing interesting walking tours in the historic district.
Browse this website of the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society to get a taste of the old times and perhaps even be inspired to visit our town and our Society’s headquarters in the Strauss Mansion Museum. Also gain information on Society events, membership and resources.

Atlantic Highlands Senior Center,
at the Harbor
Open to the Public - Light Refreshments
Enjoy stories about a uniquely lawless period on the shore - the days when organized crime families vacationed at the beach, as they made fortunes smuggling illegal alcohol through shore towns.
Matthew Linderoth, author of 'Prohibition on the North Jersey Shore, Gangsters on Vacation', will talk about the prohibition-era Jersey shore crime wave during the years when Vito Genovese, Charles Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and more fought for the control of the lucrative liquor smuggling industry. Matthew's settings range from churches and town halls to speakeasies, his characters include gangsters, Ku Klux Clan, prohibitionists, politicians and police. There was seldom a safe moment at the shore during the 1920's
Linderoth will speak at the Senior Center in Atlantic Highlands, at a free program sponsored by the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society. Following his presentation, he will sell and sign copies of his book.

The History of Draft from the Revolutionary War to World War II
Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 7:30pm
Atlantic Highlands Senior Center, at the Harbor
Open to the Public - Light Refreshments
Muriel Smith, author of the "The Report and the Draft" remembers all our veterans with a talk about the history of the draft from the Revolutionary War to World War II. She will also discuss the career of her father, Vincent de Paul Slavin, who chaired the Union NJ Draft Board during World War II.
Slavin saw many unfair deferments for critical occupations, conscientious objectors and more. He carried his fight as far as the White House, and succeeded in reforming draft board policies.
Slavin began his career as a journalist, reporting on the Lindbergh kidnappings, the Hindenberg Explosion, and other Jersey events of the 1920's and 30s. Smith will also relate stories of his exploits as an early twentieth century journalist.
A member of the Highlands Historical Society and the Freehold Borough Historic Preservation Commission, as well as a former member of the Monmouth County Historical Commission, Muriel J. Smith has been an investigative newspaper reporter for more than 50 years, and has won awards for her writing. She has worked for several different newspapers, covering a wide range of topics. In addition to 'The Reporter and the Draft' she is the author of a book on grieving and recovery, 'I Know How to Grieve, I Want To Learn How To Laugh.'
